ISEF Corner of the Week

Each week at ISEF, we highlight different aspects of our organization and our broader impact.

This week we are highlighting the various backgrounds of our students and how ISEF honors them.

ISEF students come from a wide variety of social and ethnic backgrounds. Last month, fourth year ISEF students in the Brande-Technion program had the opportunity to explore one of those backgrounds when they were given a private tour of "Perestroika", a new exhibition at the Haifa Museum. The exhibit explores the 30 years of immigration to Israel from the former Soviet Union.

The students, more than half of who come from families who emigrated from the former USSR, participated in a guided tour of the museum and also shared personal stories. The students described the values of "identity", "Zionism", "connection to the personal past" and more. Pictured is an ISEF student engaging with one of the exhibits.

It was an enriching, meaningful and exciting tour for the whole group and another way which ISEF empowers students from all backgrounds

Moran is conducting postdoctoral research in Social Sciences at The German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg. She is investigating the potential short- and long-term political impacts of COVID-19 in fragile African nations. Policymakers in Europe and the United Nations have warned that the current pandemic may lead to violent conflict in failing states across Africa. Moran's research may help provide a safer future.

It is our pleasure to support Moran in her research! Moran is one of 11 female scholars whose studies abroad are made possible by ISEF’s International Fellowship grant.

Tu Bishvat sameach and happy MLK day to all!

This year, these two holidays coincidentally fall on the same day, and we must believe there is a special significance to this. Tu Bishvat, also known Rosh HaShanah La'Ilanot, the "New Year of the Trees", is a celebration of ecology and agriculture. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a celebration of the fight for equality, and the day is a commemoration of the immense contribution Martin Luther King Jr. made to the civil rights movement.

What do these two holidays have in common? Both celebrate the metaphorical and literal fruits of our labor, and both remind us that, in order to see the fruits of the future, we must continue to plant and nourish our trees today.

Both days are calls to activism, to perseverance, and to creating a future where all people and nature flourish.
Join us in celebrating these special days and supporting ISEF students who lead Israel and the world in action.
